New Carquinez Strait (Alfred Zampa Memorial) Bridge

The New Carquinez Bridge runs along InterState 80, spanning the Carquinez Strait between Crockett and Vallejo, California, alongside the existing bridge. The suspension bridge is officially named the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge. EMI participated in type selections to choose between various cable stay or suspension bridge alternatives and their respective foundation systems.

EMI was also tasked with foundation design analyses for the most complex foundation elements (i.e. south anchorages) to characterize the foundation behavior of the highly complex battered pile group involving 380 piles. EMI developed cyclic load-deformation solutions for the anchorages. Both initial and permanent foundation displacements were estimated for a staged loading sequence including initial gravity loading on the anchorage foundation, subsequent loading from anchor cables, and earthquake-induced cyclic loading. The results from the analyses were used to design pile foundation details to resist punching shear due to high loads from the battered piles.
